So what is colour therapy & how can it help curb anxiety? To begin with I am sure that many people suffer from anxiety, after all anxiety is something we all feel at some point of time in our lives. When these feeling resurface time & time again & are triggered easily, it is then when that anxiety needs to be curbed. But this is all easier said than done.
Anxious & me? I can describe my own self as a very anxious person. Trying something new, taking big chances, facing crossroads, etc all make me anxious at the start. I figured that my anxiety stemmed from a feeling that I might not do well enough when faced with something new or a might lose an opportunity to prove myself. In the end, after I calmed myself down, I managed to do the tasks very well. In fact, I felt that if I had not been so very anxious in the first place I would have managed to do better at the task at hand.
In fact, I even tried to tell myself not to get anxious but that ended up making me feel more anxious!
No overnight revelations! After all this talk, I am not going to go ahead & tell you that all this changed overnight because IT DID NOT! I still struggle with anxiety & I have accepted it as a part of who I am. I can say that meditation, journaling, listening to songs & colour therapy helped me a lot!
Let’s talk about anxiety. According to the oxford dictionary, anxiety can be defined as a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome, strong desire or concern to do something or for something to happen.
Anxiety is one of the most common mental illnesses throughout the globe. In spite of this there is no right or wrong path to help alleviate it! Curbing anxiety is very personal activity.
So what does colour therapy do? Colour therapy is something that as I mentioned earlier has helped me a lot! It is based on the science of colours! Each colour of the spectrum is said to affect us & our moods. Science states that every colour has a vibration which can break apart the disturbances in our body & restore balance & vitality. Hues of the colours orange, red, yellow, green & blue all contain vibrations that can help alleviate anxiety. This is why a walk amidst nature or just looking at the sky can make you feel good & make your anxious feeling run away!
How can I apply colour therapy? Now that you know the colours, what can you do with them?
You can simply wear something that incorporates the colour, have a drink of that colour, surround yourself with that colour or keep a small but significant mood shifter along with you which has that colour! Keep in mind that not all colours work for everyone! Each person has one colour that strongly uplifts them. Find it out by trying out a visualisation technique – close your eyes and imagine each colour of those colours in front of your eyes one by one! The colour which makes your spirits lift is the one for you!
Another way that scientists have recommended is to use ‘colouring books’! There is something very soothing about colouring away, filling up those blank spaces with our favourite solid colours that just makes time fly away! This activity alone has helped curb anxiety upto significant levels as proved by actual tests. The activity of colouring away, makes the brain stay in the present moment. It is said to help the amygdala (the part of the brain that deals with anxiety, panic attacks, stress and depression) switch on to a sort of a ‘relaxation mode’. Regular colouring can actually help the amygdala go into repeated relaxation states thereby helping curb anxiety in the long run!
